What are minority college grants?

Many people who come from a minority background may be disadvantaged when it comes to getting a college education; this could be due to gender, disability, ethnicity or a range of other factors.

Minority college grants are one of the most common types of college grants available and almost every university and college has a range of minority college grants on offer to ensure able students have access to an education regardless of their financial situation.

Types of minority college grants

When many people think of a minority they think solely of ethnicity, but this is not the case. Although many minority college grants are given to students from different ethnic backgrounds, there are several other types of minority college grants available.

The United States federal government offers numerous grants to help students who are Native American, Latin American, black, Asian, Cuban, Arab and other different ethnicity’s access funding based on financial hardship. Many colleges also offer their own grants for students from various ethnic backgrounds.

Aside from ethnicity, there are college grants available for students who have a range of disabilities – this could be physical or learning disabilities. These types of college grants are offered at federal and state levels and through many universities and colleges.

Other types of minority college grants are awarded to groups such as lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender and women. In many cases, minority college grants are specific to the area of study the student is interested in pursuing. For example, there are minority college grants for students who want to study law and accounting.

Popular minority college grants

Although there are dozens of minority college grants available there are some that are more well known than others.

Some of the best known minority college grants include: the Actuarial Scholarships for Minority Students, The American Bar Association Legal Opportunity Scholarship Program and the American Psychological Association Minority Fellowship Program. These are all specific to the area of study the student chooses.

More general minority college grants include the Jose Marti Scholarship Challenge Grant Fund, which awards $2000 to 63 Hispanic-American students each year. Another grant is the Sons of Italy National Leadership Grant, awarded to students of Italian descent. In addition, many large companies offer minority college grants to eligible students.

Obviously to be eligible for a minority college grant you must be in a minority group. Every college grant is different so ensure you are eligible for the one that you want to apply for. If you are in doubt, speak to the grant provider to make sure you have all the right documents needed to give you the best chance of being accepted for the grant.

For many minority college grants acceptance isn’t always based just on the fact that you are in a specific minority group, they are often largely based on evidence of financial hardship and need.
